Tracing Collective Memories

Location: Telok Kurau Studio Gallery, Singapore

Dates: 18 June -  9 July 2022

A project that ruminates on the theme of memory as a social and interactive process, continuously reinforced by spaces and objects. Memories come in different forms and operations through the media of film, generative art, sculpture and installation, the artists inquire into the formation of memories both as personal and communal experiences. Collectively, the exhibition explores: how do we assign meaning to memories and mediate it? How do we create common idioms of memories? How can art become material practice of memories?

With the rapid acceleration of the velocity of time today and the constant speeding up of our experiential reality, we can only perceive, not remember. In the society of the spectacle, we can only marvel, and not remember.

"Memories are motionless, and the more securely they are fixed in space, the sounder they are"

The Poetics of Space

The significance of objects in our processes of remembering is the reason why we like to collect familiar or peculiar objects around us; they expand and reinforce the realm of memories, and eventually, of our very sense of self. The art installation, “Memory Dictionary”, looks into concretising remembrance and memories by containing and projecting the artist’s personal memories of her enbloc estate. Fabricating a series of uncanny miniature objects, spaces or architectural elements that may be recognisable yet mundane. A set that serves as a memory collection of elements that will become a history in time to come. The miniature works play with scales, aiming to create strangely familiar yet unfamiliar scenes that change the perspective of observers.
