The Little Prince Studio is a proposal for a daylight film studio by Sara Sota Lane, along the main street of Cape Canaveral to house the film production of a children story, The Little Prince. The building is a study of the filming process and production, focusing very much on the study of lighting in films.
The project attempts investigate and explore on the relationship of light, shadow and time in film, using daylight as source of light exploration. It focused on the use of design techniques to achieve different natural light qualities attempting to replace the conventional use of artificial lighting in film production with daylight. This involved various experimentation with large scaled models.
The design aim to challenge the relationship between time, space and light through the play of light and shadow in the design of its ceiling structure, window placement, building materials and the use of appropriate reflective materials. To define a new notion of time and space, a rotating base structure was incorporated in my design to empower human control on the movement of shadows, allowing for transient moment of light to be frozen in time for film production purposes.
